History

The A-10C Thunderbolt II, commonly known as the “Warthog”, is a US Air Force ground-attack aircraft designed specifically for close air support of troops on the battlefield. Introduced in the late 1970s, it was built around the powerful GAU-8/A Avenger 30 mm cannon, capable of destroying armoured vehicles and fortified targets with high accuracy.

The A-10C is renowned for its rugged construction, with titanium armour protecting the pilot and critical systems, and for its ability to operate from rough, forward airstrips. Although slow by jet standards, it is highly manoeuvrable at low altitude and can loiter over a battlefield for long periods, making it extremely effective in supporting ground forces. The A-10C upgrade added modern avionics, precision-guided weapon capability, and improved targeting systems, ensuring the aircraft remains relevant well into the 21st century.
