History

The C-47 Skytrain, famously known as the Dakota in British service, was a military transport aircraft developed from the civilian Douglas DC-3. Entering service in 1941, it became one of the most important Allied aircraft of the Second World War. Rugged, reliable, and capable of operating from rough airstrips, the C-47 transported troops, supplies, and wounded personnel across multiple theatres. It played a key role in major operations such as D-Day, Market Garden, and the Berlin Airlift. After 1945, the aircraft continued to serve worldwide, with many nations using surplus C-47s for decades. Numerous variants emerged, including the C-47S, featuring enhancements such as improved avionics and upgraded systems, extending the type’s operational relevance well into the Cold War.
