History

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was Germany’s most iconic fighter aircraft of the Second World War. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the 1930s, it first flew in 1935 and entered Luftwaffe service shortly before the outbreak of war. It saw combat in the Spanish Civil War and was the backbone of German air power during the Blitzkrieg campaigns. Renowned for its speed, agility, and powerful armament, the Bf 109 was flown by many of the war’s top aces, including Erich Hartmann. Constantly upgraded, it remained competitive throughout the conflict despite newer Allied designs. Over 33,000 were built, making it one of the most produced fighter aircraft in history. After the war, it continued to serve in several air forces into the 1950s.
