Nelson’s Column, located in London’s Trafalgar Square, commemorates Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, who died heroically at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This pivotal naval victory secured British dominance at sea during the Napoleonic Wars, though Nelson was fatally shot during the battle. The monument was constructed between 1840 and 1843, funded by public subscription, and stands over 169 feet (52 metres) tall, with a statue of Nelson atop a Corinthian column made of granite. Four bronze lions, added in 1867 and designed by Sir Edwin Landseer, guard the base. The column symbolises British naval power and national pride, serving as a lasting tribute to Nelson’s leadership and sacrifice. Today, it remains a central lanBattle of dmark in the heart of London.
