History.

Roman soldiers were the backbone of the Roman Empire, renowned for their discipline, organisation, and military innovation. Initially composed of citizen-farmers, the Roman army evolved into a professional force during the late Republic and Empire. The core unit was the legion, typically made up of around 5,000 soldiers, including heavy infantry called legionaries. These soldiers trained rigorously, carried standardised equipment such as the gladius (short sword), scutum (shield), and wore lorica segmentata armour. Roman tactics, including the testudo (tortoise) formation, allowed them to dominate battlefields across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Service often lasted 20–25 years, after which soldiers could earn land or Roman citizenship. Their effectiveness helped build and maintain one of history’s greatest empires.
